Back in December 2016, I met David Lelliott. He was the then British Deputy High Commissioner in Chandigarh (my city). That day he shared his experience of being a British diplomat with us.

He called it “Seven Lessons from Seven Postings”.

The seven things I got to learn that day were:

  1. Value the training you are given.
  2. Look after your team.
  3. Step out of your comfort zone.
  4. Listen with open ears.
  5. Values you have, pay you off.
  6. Relationships are worth.
  7. Appreciate the small gestures.

We had coffee together after the session and asked a few more questions related to his work, having fun at work and about BREXIT.
